2/3/2026 J.W. Marriot Hotel and Spa, Phuket, Thailand: We had a half day of birding on Phuket while we were vacationing with family. The hotel had lots of flowers, trees and a pond…and how fun is a Common Hoopoe’s nest? (Though it must have been just about the ugliest nest we have every seen!) Alphabetically:
A – M : Asian Brown Flycatcher , Asian Openbill , Brown-throated Sunbird (f), Chinese Pond-Heron (Did you know that everyone says it is impossible to tell the difference between a non-breeding Chinese Pond-Heron and Javan Pond-Heron? Javan are present but rare in the area, so we challenge anyone to say these are not Chinese Pond-Herons…Knock yourselves out!), Common Hoopoe (at ugly nest), Common Myna , Gray-rumped Treeswift , Little Cormorant , Large-billed Crow , Malaysian Pied-Fantail , Medium Egret .
N – Z : Oriental Magpie-Robin , Spotted Dove , White-breasted Waterhen , Yellow-vented Bulbul , Zebra Dove . Also some flowers and other wildlife!
