Recent USA and North America Trips 11/23/23 and 12/28/23

12/28/23 Amelia Island, FL: A brief outing rewarded us with a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker nibbling on berries. Also: Wood Stork , White Ibis (Ad, juv. – note the bill size variations in both ), Little Blue Heron (juv. white), Tricolored Heron , and Mallard .

12/16/23 Yulee, FL: We heard a report of a Greater Scaup hanging in a pond in Yulee, so we had to go and check it out. Also: Palm Warbler and Canada Goose along with some recent sunrise pics from Amelia Island.

12/8/23 Near JAX, FL: It was lovely to see a Purple Sandpiper duo after a few years of missing them in the area – thus the study below. They were willing to pose and continued to feed as we approached them very carefully. Also: American White Pelican , Common Ground-Dove , Greater Black-backed Gull , Dunlin , Great Egret , Osprey , Black Scoter flock fly-by, Red-breasted Merganser , and Red Knot .

12/8/23 Near JAX, FL: Another Reddish Egret put on a dance show for us and what were we supposed to do? So we hummed Tchaikovsky and took lots of pictures!

11/25/23 Near JAX, FL: First, an American Oystercatcher in great morning sun. Second , we also got to watch a Reddish Egret fishing – which is always a delight. Third, Black Skimmer individuals were taking baths in the dawn’s light. It was a super morning!

11/25/23 Near JAX, FL: Also: Osprey with fish, Ruddy Turnstone bath time, Semipalmated Plover , Short-billed Dowitcher , Wilson’s Plover , Black-bellied Plover , Wood Stork , Double-crested Cormorant , Caspian Tern , Ring-billed Gull , and Dunlin .

11/23/2023 Amelia Island, FL: A short wander on a cold, pretty morning was rewarded with a trio of waders – Wood Stork , Great Egret and Great Blue Heron . An Eastern Phoebe gave us a good look along with a Red-bellied Woodpecker (m) and lots of Yellow-rumped Warbler individuals. Also: Common Ground-dove , Forster’s Tern , Gray Catbird , Ruddy Turnstone and Sanderling huddles (Did we mention it was cold?), and Laughing Gull / Ring-billed Gull ‘squabblers’ fighting over food.
