GOING BACK IN TIME….
10/24 and 10/25/24 Gumbo Limbo Nature Center and Green Cay preserve, FL: A Bananaquit study just because they are so much fun to watch! Also: American Redstart , Merlin , Monk Parakeet , and an Ovenbird . Things got very quiet once the Merlin showed up.
10/24 and 10/25/24 Gumbo Limbo Nature Center and Green Cay preserve, FL: Purple Gallinule , Boat-tailed Grackle (m,f, FL dark-eyed.) , Glossy Ibis , Green Heron , Double-crested Cormorant , White ibis , Pied-billed Grebe, Little Blue Heron hunting , and a Great Blue Heron attempting a balancing act.
10/16/24 Amelia Island, FL: A glorious morning to be out! A little love fest with a Black-throated Green Warbler and a Yellow-billed Cuckoo visit. Sweet!
10/16/24 Amelia Island, FL: We found a Gray Catbird munching on berries. Also: Blue-gray Gnatcatcher , Northern Parula , Green Heron , Great Egret , Roseate Spoonbill , Tricolored Heron (juv., ad.), and Painted Bunting . Poorer images (but still of interest) were caught of a Bay-breasted Warbler, and a Merlin and a brave Blue Jay interacting.
10/14/24 Amelia Island, FL: Bobolink (hidden in the flowers), Prairie Warbler, Red-shouldered Hawk , Indigo Bunting , Red-bellied Woodpecker , Yellow-bellied Sapsucker , Common Yellowthroat , Eastern Phoebe , Great Blue Heron , House Wren , and a Snowy Egret gathering . Fun morning!
10/10 and 10/11/24 Troy Arboretum, Troy, AL: We went birding in Alabama rather than hanging with the hurricane! A Pileated Woodpecker pair was checking out a possible nest hole. We found these two by walking by and hearing a loud knocking inside a tree, then wood chips being tossed on top of us by the male. Funny guy! The female came to check it out as well. Also: Blue-headed Vireo , Chestnut-sided Warbler (f), Downy Woodpecker , Blue Jay , Northern Mockingbird , and Northern Flicker .
10/10 and 10/11/24 Troy Arboretum, Troy, AL: We sure enjoyed watching a Red-headed Woodpecker rearranging its winter storage! Two teens were feeding in the area as well, one with some red on its head, and one without. They were all busy, busy, busy and gave us good opportunities with the camera!
10/9 and 10/10/24 Eufala NWR, AL: We went birding in Alabama rather than hanging with the hurricane! The area was just beautiful and we had fabulous weather. We were really surprised when an American Bittern crossed the road (very slowly – thank you!) in front of our car. Also: Brown Thrasher , Eastern Bluebird , Eastern Phoebe , Philadelphia Vireo , Turkey Vulture , Yellow-throated Vireo , Acadian Flycatcher , and Eastern Wood-Pewee . Awesome!
