Recent USA and North American Trips 11/22/24 to 12/5/24

GOING BACK IN TIME….

11/27/24 to 12/5/24 We headed to Quebec City, Canada, to try and catch the Taiga Bean-Goose being see there. The bird luckily was still there and gave us great looks. While the other rarities we were hoping for had moved on, we caught a wonderful Snowy Owl , a sweet Northern Saw-whet Owl , grosbeaks and other cold weather goodies.

12/3/24 Quebec City, Canada: With the help of Yves Aubry (Thank you so very much! It was wonderful to meet you!), we found a little Northern Saw-whet Owl. The owl was so small and his eyes were so large – he looked a bit startled most of the time. He did not seem to mind us as he calmly looked about, studying us and watching birds go by. We left him sitting peacefully where he was. We also caught White-breasted Nuthatch , White-throated Sparrow , and Black-capped Chickadee . Thanks again Yves!

11/29 to 12/2/24 We took the Matane Ferry to Godbout, then worked our way down to Quebec City via Saguenay, Canada: Pine Grosbeak in berries, Evening Grosbeak in seeds, Black-capped Chickadee in pine cones, and a Hairy Woodpecker digging in a tree.

11/29 to 11/30//24 We took the Matane Ferry to Godbout, then worked our way down to Quebec City via Saguenay, Canada: Common Goldeneye (f,m) distant Common Merganser (m), Mallard (m,f), Northern Shrike (juv.), Barrow’s Goldeneye, and Bald Eagle .

11/29 to 11/30//24 We took the Matane Ferry to Godbout and worked our way down to Quebec City via Saguenay, Canada: Black Guillemot , Black-footed Kittiwake, another distant Snowy Owl , and a White-winged Scoter amidst a distant Black Scoter flock.

11/28/24 near Matane, CANADA: We had heard other birders talking of Snowy Owls being seen and we thought there was no chance of seeing it in the few days we had in Canada. Well, we drove up to some rocks overlooking the river and immediately saw these yellow eyes peeking over a rock. This juvenile beauty was content to rest right in front of us and we were careful not disturb it. We also saw Barrow’s Goldeneye flocks along the shore with American Black Duck flocks.

11/27/24 Matane, CANADA: Taiga Bean-Goose :

11/27/24 Matane and area, CANADA: Greater Black-backed Gull (w HEGU) , Iceland Gull (w HEGU) , and Common Eider (f and flock). Also: Black Scoter , Black Duck , Black Guillemot , and Canada Goose (including an odd, possibly leucistic one.)

11/22/24 A number of outings around Amelia Island and Yulee, FL: We found a Loggerhead Shrike eating a little frog and a beautiful Painted Bunting sitting out for us. We also had a Red-shouldered Hawk hunting in the yard along with a Downy Woodpecker , Northern House Wren , and a male Ruby-throated Hummingbird at our flowers. Also shown: Brown-headed Nuthatch , Yellow-rumped Warbler , Swamp Sparrow , Mottled Duck (poss. Mallard hybrid), Red-bellied Woodpecker , and Palm Warbler .
