Going Back in Time…

5/18 and 5/19/24 Brian Patteson Pelagic Trip out of Hatteras, NC: We had a wonderful two days on rather wild seas. A big, big thanks to Brian, Kate, and the rest of the crew for finding rare the Bermuda Petrel (Thought extinct for 4 centuries, then a few birds were found nesting in the 1990’s. There are now only 330 individuals in the world.) and Trindade Petrel!

5/18 and 5/19/24 Brian Patteson Pelagic Trip out of Hatteras, NC: First 2 pics are of a Leach’s Storm-Petrel (long winged/forked tail) with a Wilson’s Storm Petrel below (rounded short wing/ straight edge on tail) which was fun to catch together. More Leach’s Storm Petrel , Cory’s Shearwater , and Great Shearwater .

5/18 and 5/19/24 Brian Patteson Pelagic Trip out of Hatteras, NC: Sooty Shearwater , Wilson’s Storm-Petrel , Black-capped Petrel , Audubon’s Shearwater , Band-rumped Storm-Petrel , and a Red-necked Phalarope flock sitting on the water. We were also treated to a pod of rare Goosebeaks or Cuvier’s Beaked Whales.

5/16/24 A brief stop at Pee Dee NWR, NC: A female Northern Flicker was building her nest while a prothonotary Warbler and Indigo Bunting fed in the scrub below. Also nesting were Red-head Woodpecker and Brown-headed Nuthatch pairs. Birds were singing everywhere!

5/7/24 We headed to the Belglade area, Florida, for the day and caught Common Nighthawk (must have seen 20-25), White-rumped Sandpiper (poor light but exciting to see), Black-necked Stilt , Short-billed Dowitcher , Semipalmated Sandpiper , Stilt Sandpiper , and Solitary Sandpiper .

5/7/24 Belglade, FL: An Osprey pair were calling , a Red-shouldered Hawk was being attacked by a Red-winged Blackbird , and a female Snail Kite showed up. Also: a Green Heron with a perhaps a “too big” fish!
